What people are saying…

This book is a riveting story of 6 wonderful grandmothers who conquered their fears to help African grandmothers raising grandchildren orphaned by AIDS.  I could not put down this amazing story until I had finished reading it from cover to cover and viewing the magnificent photos that captured their journey.  I laughed, cried and envied these daunting women who gave so much of themselves to help others.  Their story is so inspiring and deserves to be shared with everyone.  Joan O’Neill Former City of Ottawa Councillor for Gloucester-Southgate Ward (1984-1996)

I got a call bright and early on March 12th from Grete Hale, an amazing lady (google her to see how amazing) whom I’d just met two days earlier at an event to celebrate International Women’s Day. I was surprised to hear from her but quite floored when she told me that she was calling to thank me for writing this wonderful story. In her words, “a story that needed to be told.” You see she had the book at the event on the 10th and had read it the previous day but finished to late in the evening to call me, hence the early morning call. She was so excited that she had to call me “right away.”

If you missed the book signing this past Saturday at Bushtukah, it’s well worth a visit to Bushtukah to buy the book, “Kilimanjaro – A Purposeful Journey.” My husband and I came back from Kilimanjaro two weeks ago. We did the same route with Tusker Trail, the same tour company  the Kilimanjaro grannies went with. We bought their book before we left for our climb and are we ever glad we did! The photos are terrific, and reading their adventures certainly gave us a lot of insight as to what we could expect on our trip. Proceeds from the sale of their book help support the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and the Snowy Owl AIDS Foundation.

Thank you to the Kilimanjaro grannies – your book was an inspiration for us every step of the way.  Judy Field, Mt. Kilimanjaro climber

I finished your book this p.m.   I started at 5:00 this am , I couldn’t sleep  ( I dreamt all night ) so got up and read for an hr. and went back to bed .  Did my stuff went for a long walk and all I could think of was how I wished I could have been with you guys…I was there ever step of the way. Got back and finished the book. What an experience you all went through together. I remembered one p.m. sitting in Nairobi  (1983 at a sunset) and being so fortunate to even see the top of Mt.Kili  ……it was not something you saw to often from there,  the top was always in the clouds.  I wondered what it would be like to be at the top. All of you gals (very young grandma’s by the way) helped put that into perspective………..to some point.

You all made such a difference for the African grandmothers and should be very proud of your journey and It will continue…
I loved the book and wish you all the best of luck with the sales of the book and if I can help out in any way ………please do not hesitate to call on me.  Gwen Webster, Volunteer and Supporter

Congratulations to all of you women climbers – you are an inspiration!!!  Patti Koeslag, Supporter and Founding member of Grands and Friends

I was thrilled to see the turnout last night.  Clearly your cause has appeal for many, many people. I did look over the book and was quite impressed with it. Congratulations on what you’re doing for all those people in Africa who aren’t as lucky as we here in Canada are.  You’re an inspiration! Dr. Robert Birnbaum, Broadview Travel Medicine Clinic

Gisele, it’s wonderful to hear of the success you’ve had with the book launch – congratulations!  What you and your friends have accomplished is truly remarkable.  The journey continues ….. Jennifer Hunter, Supporter

“Hello Kilimanjaro Grandmothers!  Congratulations and thank you for organizing such a lovely book launch last night.  I was honoured to be there, and so moved to hear you read your stories out loud and in your own words.  The book is truly another incredible feat!  So many beautiful photos, thoughtful details, and inspiring stories.  Your firm and deep commitment to each other and to African grandmothers was a strong and binding thread throughout.  I was so excited to bring the book back to the office and show it to everyone.  You may know that a few women in the audience expressed interest to me about starting their own grandmother group (I met them in the line to get your autographs!) so your courage has inspired others to do even more.  We can’t thank you enough for all that you do.  The grandmothers in Africa will certainly benefit from the success of your book, as you continue to inspire and mobilize us here at home.” Susan Mazza, Community Campaigns Liaison for the Stephen Lewis Foundation and guest speaker at the Book Launch.

“Thanks for being an inspiration to me and my daughter (what an eye opener for her….while it may sound like a negative comment her statement that ‘her grandmothers would never do something like this’ highlights that she got it—women can do way more than she thought).” Rossana DiMito, Volunteer and Supporter

“Our hearfelt congratulations on your book launch. We are so impressed with your efforts all along the way to complete this journey physically ,mentally  and spiritually.  What a lovely gift to the world.”  Sincerely,  Noreen from the Heron Seniors Centre

“What a great photo. Terrific undertaking. Way to go!”  Kris Riendeau – The Humm

Solidarity Walk – June 13, 2010

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Gisèle has signed up to participate in an exciting event to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. The Kilimanjaro Grannies have pledged to walk at least 25 of the 8,000 kilometres that the Canadian Grandmothers have set as a goal for themselves. A virtual walk of Canada.

This is a very special walk for Gisèle as June 13th would have been her brother Michel’s 54th birthday. She will be walking in his memory once again. Our goal is to raise $500.00 or $20.00 per kilometre but we can’t do it without your help!

We can assure you that the funds are going directly to the grassroots in Africa, where community-based projects are doing so much to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS. Just click on the Solidarity Walk Sponsor link and it will take you to the Participants page. Type Gisele in the First Name search box and click on Sponsor or Gisele Lalonde Mansfield to make a donation.

Your generosity would be greatly appreciated and no amount is too little.  If you aren’t able to make a donation at this time, you can support this cause by sending this request to friends, family or colleagues.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and continued support.

Aeroplan Miles go twice as far on World AIDS Day

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

On December 1st, for one day only, Aeroplan will match every mile donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation through the Beyond Miles programme. This World AIDS Day, your miles go twice as far.

THIS IS PARTICULARLY CRITICAL FOR THE UPCOMING SWAZILAND AFRICAN GRANDMOTHERS’ GATHERING, SO PLEASE READ ON!

In March 2010, the SLF will use these miles to help bring together Canadian and African grandmothers at an African Grandmothers’ Gathering in Swaziland. Donated miles will be used to facilitate the travel of both African and Canadian grandmothers to Swaziland.

They need to raise 2.5 million miles (OR MORE) on December 1st to make this Grandmothers’ Gathering a reality!

Please spread the word to friends and family but remember miles are DOUBLED by Aeroplan on December 1st ONLY. To donate you can visit the Stephen Lewis Foundation website at: www.stephenlewisfoundation.org/aeroplan

Or you can use the link below to go directly to the SLF’s Aeroplan donation page: http://www1.aeroplan.com/use_your_miles/donate_miles/charity.do?donationAE=917989352

Think Recycle

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Think Recycle is a laser cartridge, ink jet cartridge and cell phone recycling program used by charitable organizations all over North America to raise funds for their charities.

Since we registered we have limited ourselves to word of mouth and the program has proven successful. We are ready to branch out and earn even more money. So come aboard and join our campaign to help support the SLF’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and to help our environment by diverting waste from our landfills. Think Recycle is a fundraising program that achieves both of these goals. It pays the Stephen Lewis Foundation for empty ink and toner cartridges and old cell phones while helping the environment.

Check out the Program Guide from the Think Recycle website which explains most of the program and also includes Frequently Asked Questions and Answers.

All this at no cost to us! And it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3. The Kilimanjaro Grannies have been registered and collecting items to be recycled for almost a year now. Think Recycle makes it extremely easy to participate in their program by providing free enrolment, collection and marketing kits, posters and shipping. And if you don’t want to do the bookkeeping, they will send the payment directly to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. All we have to do is get the collection boxes in the community through sponsors such as schools, community centers, clubs and associations, workplaces, malls, neighborhoods, etc.

The product list is extensive with items ranging from $0.25 for some inkjet cartridges to $17.38 for a Samsung cell phone.

Think Recycle will also sponsor the planting a tree for every 24 qualifying item.

This is a unique WIN… WIN…  WIN… situation that so rarely presents itself.

  • The African Grandmothers win through the money raised for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
  • The Environment wins by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills (and no it does not get sent to 3rd world countries).
  • Our grandchildren win by making this a better world for them to live and grow up in.

Give us a call or send us an e-mail and we’ll tell you all about the program and how it is already working to help make a difference in Africa.
